Method: run at least one support search and at least one challenge search, open the most credible result of each side, prefer primary sources (official announcements, original documents, block explorers, court or government records) over aggregators and blogs, corroborate with pages from at least two different sites, and answer UNSURE when credible sources conflict or the evidence is insufficient. Open the two or three most credible results of a search together instead of one per turn. The output object must contain EXACTLY these keys: \"outcome\",\"confidenceBps\",\"evidenceFor\",\"evidenceAgainst\",\"unsupportedClaims\",\"decisiveEvidence\",\"reasoning\",\"publicReasoningTrace\",\"citations\",\"counterEvidenceSummary\". outcome MUST be one of \"YES\",\"NO\",\"UNSURE\". confidenceBps MUST be an integer from 0 to 10000. evidenceFor/evidenceAgainst/unsupportedClaims/decisiveEvidence are arrays of evidence ids taken ONLY from the supplied evidence manifest or from the evidenceId of pages you opened. Put every page that supports the claim in evidenceFor and every page that disputes or weakens it in evidenceAgainst. Cite at least two pages from two different sites. A YES or NO answer requires at least one citation of a page you found through your own search, citations from at least two different sites, and a completed challenge search whose most credible result you opened; if you cannot meet this, answer UNSURE. It’s enticing to think that so much of the brain remains untapped and is ripe for boosting human potential.\\n\\n> But the idea that we use 10 percent of our brain is 100 percent a myth.\\n\\nIn fact, scientists believe that we use our entire brain every day. Mila Halgren is a graduate student in the lab of [Mark Harnett](https://mcgovern.mit.edu/profile/mark-harnett/), an associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences and an investigator at the McGovern Institute. [The Harnett lab](https://www.markharnett.org/) studies the computational power of neurons, that is, how neural networks rapidly process massive amounts of information.\\n\\n“All of our brain is constantly in use and consumes a tremendous amount of energy,” Halgren says. “Despite making up only two percent of our body weight, it devours 20 percent of our calories.” This doesn’t appear to change significantly with different tasks, from typing on a computer to doing yoga. “Even while we sleep, our entire brain remains intensely active.”\\n\\n## **When did this myth take root?**\\n\\n![Portrait of scientist Mila Halgren](https://mcgovern.mit.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/halgren2-400x540-1.jpg)Mila Halgren is a PhD student in MIT’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Photo: Mila Halgren\\n\\nThe myth is thought to have gained traction when scientists first began exploring the brain’s abilities but lacked the tools to capture its exact workings. In 1907, William James, a founder of American psychology, suggested in his book “The Energies of Men” that “we are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.” This influential work likely sparked the idea that humans access a mere fraction of the brain—setting this common misconception ablaze.\\n\\nBrainpower lore even suggests that Albert Einstein credited his genius to being able to access more than 10 percent of his brain. However, no such quote has been documented and this too is perhaps a myth of cosmic proportion.\\n\\nHalgren believes that there may be some fact backing this fiction. “People may think our brain is underutilized in the sense that some neurons fire very infrequently—once every few minutes or less. But this isn’t true of most neurons, some of which fire hundreds of times per second,” she says.\\n\\nIn the nascent years of neuroscience, scientists also argued that a large portion of the brain must be inactive because some people experience brain injuries and can still function at a high level, like the famous case of Phineas Gage. Halgren points to the brain’s remarkable plasticity—the reshaping of neural connections. “Entire brain hemispheres can be removed during early childhood and the rest of the brain will rewire and compensate for the loss. In other words, the brain will use 100 percent of what it has, but can make do with less depending on which structures are damaged.”\\n\\n## **Is there a limit to the brain?**\\n\\nIf we indeed use our entire brain, can humans tease out any problem? Or, are there enigmas in the world that we will never unravel?\\n\\n“This is still in contention,” Halgren says. “There may be certain problems that the human brain is fundam\",\"totalChars\":6575,\"truncated\":false,\"url\":\"https://mcgovern.mit.edu/2024/01/26/do-we-use-only-10-percent-of-our-brain\"},{\"chars\":4000,\"evidenceId\":\"0xed17c2f351431c046d5f29e45dbed4599c5f89ac708e32bbeacecbc9f231d4e4\",\"from\":0,\"ref\":\"p3\",\"text\":\"![](https://www.psychologicalscience.org/redesign/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/GettyImages-914776586-1024x683.jpg)\\n\\n## **SUGGESTED LESSON PLAN**\\n\\nThis notion seems firmly rooted in popular culture despite many efforts to debunk it (Hughes, Lyddy, & Lamb, 2013). It was the basis of the movie _Lucy_ (2014), which depicted what supposedly would happen if a person actually used all 100% of her brainpower. It has been used to justify belief in pseudoscientific psychic powers and is a tacit assumption in many self-help programs designed to “unleash” untapped human potential.\\n\\nHughes, et al. (2013) found that this misconception (hereafter called the _10% Myth_) is one of the most prevalent misconceptions among the public. More concerning is the finding by Dekker et al. (2012) that about 50% of primary and secondary teachers across different cultures also endorse the 10% Myth.\\n\\nThere are a plethora of articles and videos debunking this myth both in popular media and from neuroscientists. What’s more, neuroscientists now have tools for creating images and tracking the activity of living, functioning brains. The best known of these are PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans and fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging). These techniques, which have come into common use in the last 25 years or so, have revolutionized our understanding of brain function. In PET scans, a biologically active radioactive tracer is injected into the subject (for the brain, this is usually a form of glucose). The tracer is metabolized by the brain and in doing so, positrons are emitted. The more active the brain structure, the greater the positron emission. Sensors detect the positrons through gamma radiation and then a computer can construct a three dimensional representation of brain activity based on tracer concentrations.\\n\\n> **View the full collection: [Busting Myths in Psychological Science](https://www.psychologicalscience.org/busting-myths-in-psychological-science)**\\n\\nIf we only use 10% of our brain, then a PET scan should look like Slide 2 in the [accompanying PowerPoint slides](https://www.psychologicalscience.org/redesign/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/brain-myth.pdf). The blue outline is the skull, and the circle of color indicates active brain structures. Most of the brain would be dark because of inactivity. (You are looking down on top of this person’s head). But that isn’t how the PET scan actually looks. Slide 3 shows an actual scan of a healthy person. The entire brain is constantly active, even in periods of sleep: regulating, monitoring, sensing, interpreting, reasoning, planning, and acting. Even people with degenerative neural disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease still use more than 10% of their brains.\\n\\nFor a good video clip of a neuroscientist debunking the myth, as well as a case study of a man who only has 10% of his brain, see McDonald (2016).\\n\\n## **Tracing the Myth’s Beginnings**\\n\\nThe origin of the 10% Myth is unclear, but some people attribute it to a misunderstanding of a statement in an article by William James (1907). The quote is below:\\n\\n> _Most of us feel as if we lived habitually with a sort of cloud weighing on us, below our highest notch of clearness in discernment, sureness in reasoning, or firmness in deciding. Compared with what we ought to be, we are only half awake. Our fires are damped, our drafts are checked. We \\\\[p. 323\\\\] are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources._\\n\\nNote that James is saying we often don’t feel fully energized, both physically and mentally. He in no way claims that we only use a small portion of our brain. In fact, he was observing how decorum, social norms, and routine fail to engage all of people’s resources.
